Test Cases

In its first year, the ReInvent Project partners defined seven innovative test cases, addressing key challenges from green hydrogen to hybrid energy communities. In the coming months, we will continue to share updates on the test cases through our newsletter and communication channels.

Test Case 1: Large scale E-mobility uptake B2C (with Re.alto)

This use case tests smart features for Mobility Service Providers in EV sharing within social housing, using prepaid charging, blockchain wallets, and smart contracts for secure and transparent payments while engaging users in the energy transition.

Test Case 2 - Green hydrogen for long haul trucks (IDETA)

This use case explores the most suitable and cost-effective model for local production, storage, and distribution of green hydrogen for heavy transport or industrial applications.

Test Case 3 - CollecThor (VITO/Energyville)

This project aims to make the district heating and cooling (DHC) network more efficient, ensuring that buildings receive heat and cold at an affordable rate.

Test Case 4 - Energy communities (by Klimaan, Campina Energie and SeaCoop)

  • Klimaan: this initiative in a social housing neighborhood in Mechelen explores how surplus solar energy and shared electric vehicles (EVs) can be utilized. Social housing tenants using the EVs can benefit from cheaper travel.
  • Campina Energie manages solar and wind installations in Flanders, focusing on local energy use supported by batteries, charging stations, and heat pumps to reduce surplus energy and limit the impact of negative electricity prices.
  • SeaCoop explores how a large battery can reduce costs from mismatches between wind energy production and household consumption in a renewable energy community.   

Test Case 5 - Large scale electrolysers (with Virya Energy)

This use case investigates whether electrolyzer profitability can be increased by participating in specific electricity markets or providing grid services. The goal is to determine if flexible operation can optimize the electrolyzer’s performance.

Test Case 6 - Business renewable energy communities - Wapigreen (with IDETA)

This project investigates how renewable energy installations can best serve a new business energy community (REC) in Picardy Wallonia, involving large companies, hospitals, and government organizations

Test Case 7 - Integrated energy systems for gas and electricity (with Fluxys)

An investigation on how to maximize North Sea wind energy potential by including electricity imports and exploring offshore electrolysis and hydrogen carriers using 2050 scenarios and sensitivity analyses.
